Duo inner, book pose, 951 × 669. Mac picture 867 × 669 across both pages; nothing sits in the 40 pt fold band. The floating keyboard circle is gone: the rail’s thumb circle replaces it.

Why this order

Top: who, and how well. Time and the link ring sit where the Duo keeps its clock, so one glance says the Mac is still there and how fast.

Above the thumb: leave or switch. Disconnect where every Duo reader puts close, then Apps and Windows paired in one capsule, the way the reader pairs bookmark and compass.

The middle: the thumb circle. Held like a book, the right thumb rests at mid edge. The keyboard is the button used all day, so it is the biggest and it lives there.

Below: set once. The less a control is touched, the lower it sits: Trackpad and Fit, Clipboard, Settings, Mute last in the corner.

Deck from the bottom

A MacBook keyboard split at the hinge. The fold band falls exactly where a split keyboard breaks, between T and Y, G and H, B and N. Each half sits on its own page with its own trackpad under it; the two pads act as one surface.

Deck up, 368 pt tall. Keys 40.7 pt wide, the same pitch on both pages. Left Touch Bar: esc, brightness, Mission Control, Spotlight, dictation, Focus. Right: media, volume and the Settings ring by the rail. The bare deck at the outer left is where the left hand grips. Hold the left pad and slide on the right one to drag.

Three ways up

Split at the hinge. Chosen. Full size keys, nothing in the band, the rail stays, and the picture keeps its top 267 pt. If the caret would land under the deck, the picture slides up until it is clear; it never shrinks.

Sheet on the right page only. 371 pt wide, so a whole keyboard gets 22 pt keys: the cover screen’s keyboard on twice the glass.

Floating panel, as built today. It covers the middle of the picture, hides the band problem instead of solving it, and does not come from the bottom.

Rail anatomy

Ten jobs, one column, four groups: who and how well at the top, leaving and switching above the thumb, the thumb itself, the set-once controls below it.

Time and link

The ring fills mint with link quality; Wi-Fi or USB inside, latency under it. Tap for the route.

Disconnect

Tap once and it opens into an orange pill. Tap the pill to end the session; anything else cancels.

Apps · Windows

Apps opens the launcher with search. Windows is Mission Control: every window and desktop.

Keyboard

The thumb circle, at the height the right thumb rests. Tap to raise the deck from the bottom; mint while up.

Trackpad · Fit

Trackpad turns the whole picture into a trackpad. Fit cycles Fit, Fill and 1 to 1.

Clipboard

Sends the phone clipboard to the Mac. Hold to pull the Mac clipboard back.

Settings

Gear in the Touch ID ring, same as the deck key. Tap for settings, hold for Disconnect from Studio?

Mute

Mac sound on this phone. Last and lowest: the button you set once.

States

Normal. Dark glass, white glyph.

Pressed. Lifts a tone, shrinks 6%.

Active. Mint with a black glyph: Trackpad, Fit 1 to 1, Mute off.

Deck up. The thumb circle turns mint.

Windows

Long press. A label slides out to the left; let go to cancel.

Disconnect Studio

Disconnect, armed. One tap arms, second tap ends. Orange lives only here.

Compact rail

Under 500 pt of height (phones in landscape, the cover sideways) the rail keeps eight of ten. Buttons drop to 38 pt, latency hides, and Clipboard and Mute move to the top row of the Settings sheet. Order never changes, so the thumb learns one map.

Flat, and on a phone

The same rail, the same order. On a phone the rail goes to the side away from the Dynamic Island, so the island and the rail never stack on one edge.

Don’tTrackpad beside the keys. Sharing the width shrinks the keys to 12 pt, too small to hit, and the pad is too narrow to swipe.
